Weekly Discussion Questions for October

WEEK 1

PETER HEALING AND PREACHING

Acts 3:1-26

Peter makes the most of a gathering to preach his 2nd sermon about Jesus.

Questions-

  • Peter and John respond to a request for money with a unique offer?
  • Have you ever witnessed a miraculous healing? 
  • How does this healed man respond?
  • What is the gist of Peter’s second recorded sermon?
  • Peter includes a familiar response to repent, but adds a new wrinkle, “20 so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send the Messiah appointed for you, that is, Jesus.” What do you notice or  wonder about this promise? 
  • How do you experience times of refreshing?

WEEK 2

BOLDNESS IN ACTION

Acts 4:1-22

The Disciples were bold in their proclamation.

Questions-

  • What annoyed the leaders about the actions of Peter and John?
  • Peter knows what bothers them, and he goes right back to it. What is the gist of his message to these leaders?
  • What is the characteristic the leaders recognize about Peter and John?
  • How do John and Peter answer their command to cease and desist?
  • Where do you see boldness in action?

WEEK 3

THE PEOPLE PRAY FOR BOLDNESS

Acts 4:23-37

The Spirit works in mysterious ways, granting power to speak and to listen.

  • Why do the nations rage and governing authorities oppose the Kingdom?
  • How were they raging in the time of Acts? How do they range now?
  • For what reason are the disciples not concerned by the actions of the leaders?
  • What is their prayer in verse 29? What might it lead to?
  • What impresses you about Luke’s description of the early church in verses 32-35?

WEEK 4

GOD DELIGHTS IN HONESTY

Acts 5:1-16

The first big church scandal involved hypocrisy.

  • What is God’s beef with the gift that Ananias and Sapphira bring?
  • Peter says they were lying to God, how were they doing that?
  • Peter asks Sapphira the exact price for the field they sold, how was that important?
  • Why would hypocrisy be harmful to this young church?
  • How can we be more genuine and avoid this type of hypocrisy?

WEEK 5

GAMALIEL TRUTH

Acts 5:17-42

Do not oppose what God is doing.

  • The disciples are jailed and freed in record time, what do they do next?
  • What made them so focused in their preaching?
  • What bothered the leaders about their preaching?
  • What do you notice about Gamaliel’s advice? What do you wonder?
  • What might God be doing right now that we might be tempted to oppose?
