Week 1: NOVEMBER 1

SURVIVING THE WILDERNESS:

Idolatry: The Golden Calf

Exodus 32:1-6

Questions:

  • What made the Israelites so quick to start worshiping the golden calf?
  • Using the Bicycle Wheel illustration (the hub is what we make most worthy “worship”, and spokes are things we are in relationship with):
  • What are some hubs that you see in your community?
  • What are key spokes in your own life?
  • Which sneaky spoke keeps trying to become your hub?
  • What would it mean to organize your life around The Uncontrollable Subject rather than a controllable object?
  • How do we keep the Triune God as our Uncontrollable Subject?

Week 2: NOVEMBER 8

SURVIVING THE WILDERNESS:

Building Tabernacles

Exodus 35:4-29; 40:34-38

(extended reading 2 Samuel 7:1-7 and Ephesians 2)

Questions:

  • How do you engage with the question ‘where is God’? (imagine the question coming from a variety of different angles, perhaps ‘where is your God?’… etc)
  • When you long for being together in church again, what is it you are longing for? How might some of the core values be lived out right now?
  • How do you set apart space to honor and praise God on a weekly basis? What makes that hard/easy?
  • How might you participate in God’s activity around you this week?

Week 3: NOVEMBER 15

SURVIVING THE WILDERNESS:

The Promised Land

Deuteronomy 34:1-12

Questions:

  • How do you think Moses felt as he gazed at the promised land, knowing he would never make it there?
  • The Bible describes deeper relationship as our promised land, how does that feel to you?
  • How does hope for deeper relationships help you today in the here and now?
  • What helps you to daily keep your eyes on the prize?
  • What is out there that draws our focus and attention away from deepening relationship?

Week 4: NOVEMBER 22

SURVIVING THE WILDERNESS:

Gratitude in the Wilderness

Psalm 107:1-9

Seven Sacred Pauses of attention to God,

Prayerful living through the hours of the day

Questions:

  • When do you especially feel the stress of the wilderness?
  • When have you felt settled in God’s presence?
  • Are there times in the day when you find it easier to be attentive to God?
  • What awakens you to gratitude?
  • What practices do you engage in to help you pause in God’s presence through the hours of the day?

Week 5: NOVEMBER 29

ADVENT 2020:

What John Saw

Revelation 1:9-20

John sees a vision of Jesus in the midst of His church, dressed as One who has accomplished His work.

Questions:

  • How have you experienced Jesus in the midst of His church?
  • What are some of the healthy aspects (The bride of Christ) that your experience of church?
  • How have you experienced the less healthy aspects (the brokenness) of church?
  • What elements of what John saw caught you?
  • What does it mean that Jesus is dressed as one who has finished his work?
