Doug’s Weekly Words – Gatherings – June 18, 2010

June 17, 2010

Greetings Fellow Ministers,

I want to write about something that is coming next Fall to FPC that I am incredibly excited about.  Our leadership has decided to offer a brand new style and type of community experience to the FPC mix that we are calling “Gatherings”.

The many small groups that are such a part of FPC are encouraged to continue meeting and continue flourishing.  This is not a substitute for those.  This is a different level of community experience that we hope will complement what is already happening in small groups and in our church.

Here is what makes these groups different:
1 – They are larger than our normal small group (10-20 people).
2 – They are time-limited, as they meet weekly for only 8-10 weeks.
3 – They take place during 2 seasons in our church life.  The Fall Gathering season will run from mid-Sept. through Thanksgiving Week.  The Spring season will run from February through Easter.
4 – They will have a set time, place, and facilitator, around a specific issue or topic.

We hope that this new level of community experience will allow for some exciting things to happen:
1 – For those who are new to our church, this will be a chance to meet a wide variety of folks in the church in a quicker time, hopefully allowing someone new to our community an easier chance to make connections and friendships.
2 – Hopefully this will open another avenue into church life for those who are not involved in any church.
3 – This will be a chance to do some adult education that has been missing in our church.
4 – This will allow some of the talented teachers in our midst a chance to ply their craft.

There will be a lot more info about the Gatherings this Summer and in early Fall.  Please be praying for this new and very exciting new endeavor.
