SPOILER ALERT - These weekly words will reference the finale of LOST…
Sunday was a big day for me. It began as a dream come true. Five congregations all worshiping together in the Mt. Baker Theater! How fun was that?!? There were a host of FPCers that were deeply involved in pulling off a wonderful celebration of Pentecost. I was proud of our community, proud of our churches, and very proud of FPC for taking the lead and putting this celebration on.
The afternoon was spent doing whatever my lovely daughter wanted to do – which involved 3 hours of Mythbusters – that was pretty restful.
Dinner that night was with the staff of a camp that our family helps put on. Every year we spend one of our 4 weeks of vacation seeking to bless families battling cancer. It is a tiring, exhausting, depleting, sad, and joyous time of blessing. There are 3 other families at FPC that help put this week on so the staff came up to serve dinner and throw around ideas with us.
And then then the day ended with LOST. After 6 years of questions, the final episode came. It did not disappoint me. The most intriguing idea was the end. The characters all ended up in a place where relationships continued, where life was eternal, where the only time was now, and it looked very surprisingly like a church, with pews and stained glass windows. There were images of other faiths all around the church, but it felt distinctly church. It was an image of heaven and eternity with relationships being restored and people being reconciled.
But it was a church without Jesus. It was heaven without repentance or grace. It was all the promise of heaven – without the best part – Jesus. Not to mention that it was a story on TV and not real. And I thought about the way the day had started, at a church with real relationships, real promise, and a very real Jesus. I was able to give thanks, for as much as I had looked forward to the LOST finale, I would so rather have been in the Mount Baker Theater singing and worshiping with brothers and sisters. There we had what so many in our community are hungering for. It may be time that we let them in on the secret…we are truly FOUND.
In His Eternal Life,
Doug B.
